In today’s world, grief doesn’t just live in our hearts—it often lives online too. When someone we love passes away, their digital presence becomes more than just a series of photos and posts—it becomes a living piece of their story. Their Facebook page, full of memories and milestones, can feel like a space where their voice still echoes. At Celebrife.com, we truly understand how deeply personal these digital spaces can be. That’s why we’re here to help you memorialize a loved one’s Facebook account—and why it matters so much.

Leaving a Facebook page “alive” can be awkward for friends and family (i.e. new friend requests, DM’s etc). The family has two ways to resolve the “live” Facebook page for a deceased family member:

  1. Delete the Facebook page (provides a sense of closure) OR

  2. Memorialize the Facebook page, which adds “In Memory of” to the page and freezes some of the direct communication features of the account.

For many of us, visiting a loved one’s Facebook page after they’ve passed can bring a flood of emotions. There are birthday wishes they once received, vacation snapshots filled with joy, kind words they shared with others, and even silly status updates that now feel priceless. Frozen in time, these moments can offer comfort on the hardest days. But if the account isn’t memorialized, it can become vulnerable to hacking or to simply slip into digital obscurity. That’s why it’s so important to take steps to protect it.

When you request that Facebook memorialize an account, it’s like gently placing a glass cover over a treasured scrapbook. The profile is no longer active; no one can log in or change anything. Instead, the name is updated to include “Remembering,” the page becomes a quiet, dignified place where memories can live on. Friends and family can still write messages, share stories, and visit whenever they need to feel close again.

Seven steps to memorialize an account on Facebook

  1. Go to the Memorialization Request Page

  1. Enter the Full Name of the Deceased

Provide the name exactly as it appears on their Facebook profile.

  1. Submit the Profile URL

Copy and paste the web address (URL) of your loved one’s Facebook profile.

  1. Upload Proof of Death

To verify the request, you must submit documentation, such as an obituary, death certificate, or memorial card.

  1. Choose Your Request Type

Select whether you’d like to request memorialization or removal of the account.

  1. Submit the Form

Double-check the information, then click “Send” to submit your request to Facebook for review.

  1. Wait for Confirmation

Facebook will process the request and notify you once the account has been memorialized.

At Celebrife.com, we go a step further. With just a few clicks, you can link your loved one’s memorialized Facebook to their Celebrife Memorial Portal.
